Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of Sikhs, introduced ‘Kaur’ and ‘Singh’ in 1699, when he administered Amrit (baptism) to both male and female and formed them as ‘Sikhs’. All female Sikhs were asked to use the name ‘Kaur’ after their forename and male Sikhs were to use the name ‘Singh’. ‘Kaur’ means “Crown Prince”. The name acts as a symbol of equality among men and women.
